A Tribute to My Teacher, Mentor and Colleague — Prof. Dr. Kanteshwar Raj Saxena
-P. Uma Maheswara Reddy
My association with Prof. Dr. Kanteshwar Raj Saxena dates back to 1967, when I first came under his guidance as a student of B.Sc. (Special) in Zoology and later during my M.Sc. in Zoology. Our relationship subsequently evolved from that of a teacher and student into one of colleagues when, in 1975, I was selected as a faculty member to teach Zoology at the University College of Science, Osmania University.
As a teacher, Prof. K.R. Saxena was punctual, disciplined and regular in attending his classes. He was a deeply learned teacher and firmly believed that a teacher in the classroom should always be more knowledgeable than the taught. This principle left a lasting impression on me and inspired me to emulate him throughout my own teaching career.
Our association grew even stronger when we began sharing academic responsibilities and working together on a couple of papers. During the preparation of his books, he would often seek my opinion regarding certain illustrations. These interactions gave me an opportunity to appreciate not only his scholarship but also his openness to the views and suggestions of his colleagues.
As a human being, Prof. Saxena was remarkably down-to-earth and humble. He was soft-spoken, composed and always positive in his outlook. I believe these qualities brought him close to his superiors, who trusted him with several important and confidential responsibilities related to the University.
He was also entrusted with the responsible position of heading the University College of Science at Saidabad.
In one sentence, I would describe Prof. K.R. Saxena as a man of great composure, dignity and decorum, who was respected and honoured by all who knew him.
It is my privilege to pay my humble respects to our beloved teacher, mentor and colleague, Prof. Dr. Kanteshwar Raj Saxena, through this small tribute commemorating his 100th birth anniversary. His scholarship, humility, discipline and dedication continue to remain an inspiration to generations of students and teachers.
