A Freedom Fighter, Gandhian and Physician Devoted to Humanity
Dr. Sharda Prasad Nigam, associated with Sadar in Betul district, Madhya Pradesh, was the father of Hemlata Saxena and father-in-law of Prof. Kanteshwar Raj Saxena (1926–2026).
A follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Nigam wore khadi throughout his life. During India’s freedom struggle, he supported the families of fellow freedom fighters who were imprisoned for their participation in the national movement.
A homeopathic physician in private practice, he placed his patients’ welfare above financial gain and never insisted on receiving consultation fees, believing that medical care should remain an expression of service to humanity.
Dr. Nigam passed away on 4 October 1993. His inclusion in this commemorative tribute to his son-in-law, Prof. Kanteshwar Raj Saxena, recognises his place in the family’s history and preserves the memory of his contributions to the freedom movement and the community he served.
