“This Is My Guru Dakshina”: A Teacher’s Legacy That Lives On

I remember one incident very clearly because it says so much about the kind of teacher Baba was and the impact he had on people’s lives.

Once, Baba was admitted to a hospital for a surgical procedure. During his stay, we noticed that the surgeon treated him with unusual warmth and respect. There was something deeply sincere in the way he spoke to Baba, though at the time, we did not know why.

After the surgery, when the discharge formalities were being completed, we looked at the bill and were surprised to see that the surgeon’s fee was marked as “NIL.” We were naturally confused.A little later, the surgeon, Dr. Doraswamy, came to meet Baba personally.

With great respect, he told us that he had studied from Baba’s Zoology textbooks during his intermediate years. He said those books had helped him secure admission into MBBS and had played an important role in shaping his journey as a doctor. Then, with folded hands, he said something we will never forget: “This is my Guru Dakshina.

How can I take fees from my teacher?”It was a simple moment, but one that stayed with us. In that moment, we saw just how many lives Baba had touched through his teaching and his books. For our family, it was a moment of deep pride and gratitude. More than anything, it reminded us that the legacy of a true teacher lives on in the lives they help shape.
