When a Road Roller Became Our Uninvited Guest
--Manoj Raj Saxena
This is a small but unforgettable incident from around 1970, when our family moved to Swarn Vihar. At the time, the area around our house was still developing, and since the house was situated on a hill, getting proper road access was a major challenge. Baba took a great personal interest in getting the road constructed. He made several trips, met with officials, followed up persistently, and after considerable effort, somehow managed to get the road work sanctioned.
When the work finally began, he was involved in it as though he were par t of the construction team himself.Every day, Baba would go out to see how the work was progressing, talk to the workers, and keep a close eye on what was happening. The road construction had become part of his daily routine, and he was determined to see it through.
Then came the day we all remember. While working on the hill, a huge road roller somehow slipped off the road and rolled straight into our boundary, where it got firmly stuck. The workers tried their best to get it out, but the massive machine simply refused to move.Baba was extremely worried. After putting so much effort into getting the road built, he now had a giant road roller sitting inside the compound, and he could not imagine how such a heavy machine would be removed without damaging the property. For several days, he kept discussing possible solutions with the workers and thinking about what could be done.
As was his nature, Baba also turned to his faith. He prayed earnestly for the road roller to be removed safely and without causing any damage. Every day, he would go and look at the machine, talk to the workers about the problem, and continue to have faith that somehow a solution would be found.Eventually, trucks were brought in to pull the road roller out. It took a great deal of effort, but slowly, with the combined strength of the trucks and the workers, the stubborn machine was finally pulled out of our boundary.
Baba was absolutely delighted.
The tension that had been troubling him for days finally lifted, and in his usual generous way, he decided to celebrate by hosting a party for all the labourers and workers who had helped with the road construction and, more importantly, with getting the road roller out of our compound.
That evening, Baba was finally able to relax. The road was progressing, the road roller was out of the compound, and the problem that had occupied his mind for days had been solved. After all the worry, prayers and excitement, he could finally sleep peacefully that night. It may seem like a simple incident today, but for us it remains one of those stories that has stayed alive in the family over the years.
Perhaps it is because the incident captures so much of Baba himself: his determination to get things done, the personal interest he took in everything around the house, his faith when faced with a problem, and his instinct to share his happiness with the people who had helped him.A road roller may have found its way into our boundary that day, but in doing so, it also found its way into our family memories forever.
